With a crazy busy summer ahead of us Tyler and I decided to take July long weekend for quiet couple’s getaway. We will be away with my family on our one year wedding anniversary at the end of the month, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to celebrate a year of marriage!

Friday afternoon Tyler picked me up right from work and we headed to the ferry, hoping to catch the ferry to Nanaimo to shoot over to lake Cowichan afterwards. Once we arrived it was clear we were not making a ferry to Nanaimo that night, so we decided to head to Swartz Bay instead and do a little more driving than we expected. Once we were settled on the ferry, we ran into a friend from my work and she and her husband gave us some great adventure ideas for the weekend.

We had originally planned to head up to Tofino and then back down to Victoria, but we were easily swayed into heading to Port Renfrew instead. After the ferry ride we headed for our first destination, Lake Cowichan. Exploring with a 4×4 on the island was a new adventure for us. It is quite interesting to see the differences between the mainland’s FSRs and the ones on the island. We enjoyed a much less bumpy ride than we expected over to our first stop Pine Point Recreation Site.

We lucked out with a nice quiet spot in the forest. After setting up camp we headed for a sunset walk along the beach. After taking in the views of the beautiful lake, which we will be sure to come back to, we headed to bed as we wanted to get up early to make the most of our drive to the coast.

Over night we get pelted with rain. In the morning we quickly made a tailgate breakfast and packed up. On the way we could not pass up the opportunity to take a couple pictures of our beloved 4Runner. We found a lovely riverbed that Tyler enjoyed driving down. He hopes to return one day and camp right on those rocks. Unfortunately, the closer we got to the coast the wetter the weather became.

We had hoped to hike a bit of the Juan de Fuca trail, however the rain cut our explorations a bit short. We stopped at Sombrio Beach and China Beach and were in awe of how beautiful this place we call home is, even in all of the rain!

After exploring the pristine beach we headed towards Sooke, to stock up on some much needed supplies. After grabbing some food and gas we headed back towards China beach to find a place to camp. Being that it was a long weekend this task did not come as easily as expected. We tried French Beach which was completely booked as was China Beach’s campsites. The park ranger suggested heading back to Jordan River.

With some luck we were able to snatch the last available spot right on the ocean. At this point the rain was on and off and we were able to set up without getting too wet. We had a relaxing evening watching the waves and the children playing on the beach. It was so rejuvenating even in the rain to be able to completely disconnect and admire the amazing scenery that surrounded us.

The next morning we got up and headed towards Victoria. This was to be our last stop on our crazy fast long weekend. On the way, we stopped in Esquimalt to visit an old military post and get whipped around by the wind! Tyler quite enjoyed driving around Esquimalt, a younger Tyler had hoped to one day join the army, so a small part of him loves to get to see these types of locations. After Esquimalt, we turned the truck towards Victoria. We spent the day driving around beautiful neighbourhoods and picking out our retirement home.

We enjoyed the view from Spiral Beach, finally getting to see and feel the warm sun after a couple of days of wet weather. A couple of days, hiking and camping meant we were in disparate need of a shower so we headed towards our hotel, Abigail’s Hotel.

We found this beautiful, s hotel online and could not wait to enjoy the history. Taking pictures of our room completely slipped our minds, so to see it you will just have to check it out for yourself. Checked in and showers taken we took a walk to downtown Victoria where all the Canada Day celebrations were being had.

This being our anniversary trip we opted for a short walk and an early night in our hotel room. The next day Monday morning , we walked back downtown Victoria to window shop and enjoy some Chocolat Favoris, an all-time favorite of Kassandra’s.

We used to go to the original shop back in Quebec with my Quebecois family. Enjoying this small treat is like being with family every time. As we do in almost all of the places we visit we hopped in the truck and started to drive. From here we were able to point out a neat peninsula, that after some research we discovered was a bird sanctuary that can be driven along. Well Tyler having an eye for a good 4Runner picture couldn’t pass up the opportunity, so we went that way to take some pictures.

Victoria really did not disappoint with the views we got. Our ferry not being until 9pm we decided to head to Island View Beach just outside of Sydney. This was the perfect place for us to relax for the last couple of hours of our trip. We even had time to set up the tent to let it dry out! Tepui could have made a killing off of the advertisement we were doing for them! We had so many questions and at one point Tyler even joked about charging a viewing fee.

Tyler bought an ENO hammock that he could not go home without trying out. We got the 2 person one and it was so comfortable! We cannot wait to set it up again soon! Reluctantly we packed up the tent and went to catch our ferry. Luckily we were blessed with some beautiful views on the way home as well, including a jaw dropping supercharged 3rd gen with Gobi roof racks.

Tyler and I always enjoy our adventure trips, but this one somehow felt different. We were constantly in awe over how gorgeous our province is.

We cannot wait to head back over the the island some time soon. BCOR weekend. Our secret spot. Capitol Reef. This site was designed with the. All Posts 4x4ing Travel Hiking. Canada Day- Vancouver Island. Recent Posts See All. Post not marked as liked. Post not marked as liked 1.
