Can anyone offer me advice about which dates and times would be least worst for driving through Vancouver around the long weekend Canada Day holiday which I understand is on Monday July 1? Once on the mainland, we could either go up toward the Whistler direction or out toward Harrison Hot Springs not yet decided.

Ultimately, we need to be in Mile House on Sunday June 30th. We prefer not to take the other ferry route to Horseshoe Bay from Vancouver Island as this means doubling back on a route we’ve already driven, therefore I’m looking for advice about the driving from Tsawwassen terminal specifically changing the route isn’t an option.

Which of these dates, times and directions should we aim for to avoid the worst of the traffic around Vancouver? We’re from Switzerland and it’s our first trip to Canada. Any advice would be very welcome! Usually the Friday and Monday of a long weekend are the busiest.

Thursday, Saturday and Sunday will be busy too on Canada Day long weekend. School gets out on Thursday, June 29th.

Many families get on the roads right away. In recent years, ferry usage has really increased in the summer, making a reservation on the ferry sailing of your choice mandatory unless you want a 1 or 2 sailing wait. If you expand this map, you can see the interchange where Hwy 17 joins Hwy 1 at Hwy Hwy 17 is a two lane divided highway.

Traffic goes quite quickly and avoids Vancouver city all together. From Tsawwassen ferry terminal, it should take you about Remember too that you need to allow a 1 hour wait for the ferry at Swartz Bay and the 1. The travel time begins to add up. Almost 8 hours travel in total. The Chilliwack Hotel has a restaurant called Prestons which serves good food, especially their seafood chowder. I can definitely echo the advice above. Definitely get a reservation on the ferry.

You shouldn’t run into too much city traffic coming directly from Tsawwassen terminal. I always have good luck using Google maps on my phone for GPS as it always seems up to the minute with traffic conditions. The drive up to Mile House will be gorgeous that time of year. The Cariboo is a beautiful area of the province and the scenery will be breathtaking. One bit of advice for this trip would be to check local forest fire conditions before you head out.

We’ve had quite a lot of forest fires in the last few years, particularly in the Cariboo region so check your route ahead of time. Fire season usually starts a bit later in the summer so odds are it will be ok. Ok, so school will let out on the 27th or 28th for most families, and then there will be a mass exodus from the city. The 28th would be a very very bad day to try and get out of town.

The 29th would be people who are heading out for a week or two. They’ve opted not to join the weekend craziness and give themselves more time to get out of town.

I would expect things will settle down by Saturday afternoon and then it will all be flowing back into town on the 1st, so opposite to the direction you are heading. If this is your first time doing this route, make sure you allow some time to enjoy the drive up Hwy 1 through the Fraser Canyon. There are lots of points of interest Hell’s Gate, old rail bridges, Thompson River rapids which are worthy of a stop and photo op.

It’s busy all summer here. It depends on what your plans are but if you read post 1, school gets out on the Thursday before Canada Day and the roads will be busy all the long weekend. Visiting earlier in June will take at least some of the pressure off as families are tethered to school, not going very far.

If you would like to start a new question with more detail about your visit, you will get some dedicated help. Thanks very much everyone for the great advice! Looking forward to it.
