This suspension set-up has received universally glowing reviews, but it didn’t quite have me sold. That auto setting usually worked wonderfully, comfy, compliant and controlled, except when I hit an unexpected mid-corner bump or hole when the whole bike seemed to shimmy in an unsettling manner.

Switching it to the solo-rider setting is instantly too-firm, but you do get far more predictable response. Your average buyer should be perfectly happy, though, and those who’d prefer the greater flexibility often delivered by the manual adjustment the Caponord eschews will simply have to eat more. Whereas the FZ1 uses quite a few important components from the excellent Yamaha R1 sports bike, the Tuono is Aprilia’s RSV R sports bike, stripped of its fairing and with a new set of raised handlebars fitted.

The frame, the chassis, the brakes and the powertrain are all taken directly from the RSV, so before I even turn a wheel I know this is going to be pretty hardcore. Take the frame, for example, a box-section, aluminium-alloy, twin-spar cage that is more rigid but lighter than the old Tuono’s frame.

The brakes have been upgraded to double floating discs with four-piston Brembo Gold callipers at the front and two-piston Brembo Golds at the rear, fed using aeronautical-grade metal braided hoses to eliminate sponginess. In short, Aprilia hasn’t really held back when it came to the Tuono’s specification. The engine is no less impressive. The dry-sump, cc “V60 Magnesium Evolution” V-twin engine is derived from that of the RSV-R with only a few minor changes to improve torque at low revs.

All of this helps boost torque to a healthy Nm at 8,rpm, allowing the Tuono to pull strongly from as little as 3,rpm, while peak power also climbs a notch to hp at 9,rpm.

To be honest, the Factory specification isn’t that different from the standard RSV on paper, and there’s no difference in the frame, engine or gearbox. The all-aluminium, box-section twin-spar frame is largely carried over with the exception of the steering damper and the RSV’s engine produces the same hp and Nm of torque, too. Unlike most sportbikes, the RSV is powered by a V-twin engine which delivers its power in a very different way to high-revving Japanese fours.

There’s no shortage of poke, and the engine is also incredibly flexible, pulling hard from as little as 3, rpm and not relenting until past the 10, rpm mark. It’s mated to a sharp clutch and delightfully precise gearbox, which shifts cleanly and even with the standard exhaust pipes, it makes a rich and purposeful sound as you’d expect from a race-bred machine.

It also rides like a race-bred machine. Acceleration is impressive, but with a fat powerband devoid of peaks or troughs, it’s easy to modulate the performance and exploit it to the full. The throttle is sharp and response is instantaneous, just as it should be in such a focussed machine, while the four-piston Brembo calipers, radial mounted are no less responsive and offer unbelievable stopping power.
